I have a hypothetical question. Suppose you are currently Hepatitis B negative and you begin a series of shots to get vaccinated (3 shots are required over a 6 month period). Month 1 you get your first shot; but then in month 2, you get exposed to the virus while you are traveling in Asia.

What happens next?

According to the CDC website, if a person who has been exposed to Hep B gets vaccinated within 24 hours it can prevent infection.

Don't know about the effectiveness/lifespan of the vaccine after 1 shot...

I had to be vaccinated before traveling to Asia and I'm trying to remember whether I had completed the shots or not, but I did not contract any infection despite poor hygiene in the areas which I visited.
