Q: Hepatitis and protecting the liver
asked by: DoctorQuestion on February 3rd, 2009
Current condition
About 8 months after achieving SVR
We did the Lab test for ALT 3months ago, result in normal range

Yesterday 3.1.09
We did the Lab test for LFT, Thyroid Function test, blood for cp and esr
Alkaline phosphatase - normal
Bilirubin - normal
AST - high ( nearly 2 folds)
Alt - high ( nearly 2 folds)
T3 - normal
T4 - high ( little )
TSH - normal
ESR - 20 ( high)
HB - normal
Lymphocytopenia
Platelet - reduced ( 134 )

My question is that,
1 because of increased ALT and AST,I would like to know how about your expert opinion for that. Is there any concern about relapse of hepatitis C
or not.
2 If there is no concern, how does she live afterwords to maintain SVR ?

Both alanine aminotransferase (ALT )and aspartate aminotransferase (AST) blood levels can be increased in other diseases besides liver damage. However, combined with other increased results, liver damage is usually recognized as the most probable cause. Increased levels of AST and ALT are often seen long after hepatitis, even it is treated.

Avoiding taking too much fatty food, that will have to be digested, is recommended. You might want to take liver protecting over-the counter products that contain silymarin, for example.
