Ah...I see. Could you go into a little more detail. Up and functioning normally does not indicate bipolar. From what you've said it sounds like the diagnosis of depression is correct. If he were bipolar he'd be bouncing off the walls 
Does he have any other symptoms of bipolar? If he does you could always get a second opinion (see my other comment regarding forcing him to a doctor!) I was dragged kicking and screaming, though I was a female teenager so this was obviously physically easier to do.....
