Q: Help with my insomnia!!

I have been having trouble falling asleep at night for almost a year now after a nervous breakdown. The only thing I have found that actually knocks me out is Ambien but it causes me to sleep walk along with other dangerous side effects. I do suffer from anxiety and other disorders that are being treated. My doctor gave me Xanax which relaxes me along with Vistaril that has really helped with anxiety, but I still don't sleep at night. When I do fall asleep early in the morning after being up all night I can't wake up. I have tried many things prescribed and over the counter. I've tried Melatonin, prescription anti-psychotic meds that only kept me awake, and even Benadryl. Nothing puts me to sleep other than Ambien which is a danger to me. Any suggestions from anyone who has experienced this problem in the past and found something that works?

when you get the anxiety attacks after words do you get to cleaning and rearranging? i use to and after moving furniture and cleaning it would kick my butt or i would take this one sleep aid trying to remember than name i will get back to you on it. but it doesnt make u dependant it just makes it so if you cant sleep it produces the hormorne that you produce to sleep.

Thanks. I'm not having anxiety attacks that are keeping me awake. I think I've just been up all night for so long now I can't seem to find anything to turn my clock around.

Thanks Kd. I wish it were so simple. I was sick all week and last night we did some redecorating of our bedroom to give the room a more peaceful feeling. I took an Ambien and was asleep by midnight. Unfortunately, I left the cell phone by my bed and my son woke me up an hour later because he was too lazy to look for his keys to open the door himself. After that I was up all night and fell asleep early this morning. I've tried the soft CDs, sleepy time tea, a nice hot shower and nothing that simple that would work for most people has been successful for me. I'm going out of my mind. I'm going to try the same thing tonight but without the cell phone to wake me up. If I take the Ambien and get a decent nights sleep I don't feel tired the next day. I know that I can't take it for a long period of time and was hoping there was something out there, maybe over the counter that has helped someone who had horrible sleep problems like I do. There are a lot of over the counter sleep aids or even something natural I can get from the health food store but I want someone who has had the same problem as me to recommend something.

This I fully understand..It takes me forever to get to sleep and i awaken very esily..I never go into a deep sleep..I had a sleep swtudy done and they said for 45 mintues I was in my deepest sleep..For 3 hrs i was in and out then just awake..Maybe it is the foggy mind that made me not understand..
I do use the tapes and all the other things, hot chocolate, neck muscle massager, full body massage, sex,OTC meds, perscription meds, alcohol to relax, clean housee, write etc..Skleaxin helps with the inflammation and relaxation-will make you feel droswsy just can;t have interruptions.. unless you have tried skelaxin not much to offer.. stay wore out....sorry.

Yeah, those types of meds usually give me that affect too but I'm looking to see if there is something natural that anyone has used and found success with. It's probably wishful thinking but I thought I would try. Thanks Kd.

I did try Lunesta a while back when my sleep habits weren't so bad and it did nothing for me. I don't want to take Ambien anymore because it's doing a job on my memory so I stopped taking it two nights ago. Last night I was actually tired and went to bed around 12:30 midnight...Everytime I closed my eyes something jolted me awake and I started to hallucinate. It was horrible. I take Vistaril at night and sometimes Xanax if I'm really stressed. I also don't know why I said that anxiety wasn't keeping me up because I know a lot of it is anxiety. My doctor also took my blood yesterday to test for premenopause. He thinks that may be a factor. I'm only 44 but my sister started early too. Another problem is sleeping too long when I do fall asleep. The night before I went to sleep around 4am and had to wake up for a doctors appt. so I only slept for 4 hours. Last night I slept for 14 hours, YES! 14 hours. This is driving me crazy.

Hey Wendy- you know I was wondering if you have tried the sleepy time teas..I recently began trying these and it may be mind over matter but it has helped a few times..I also used extra OTC eye ointment (thicker than eye drops for the dryness)to make my eyes feel even more heavier and that helped as well..kd

I'm just impossible. I have a tea I bought from Teavana that puts you right to sleep. It worked on me when I first tried it but then nothing. I do have some sleepy time tea in the cabinet and I'm going to try. I'm going to make myself a cup right now. I'll let you know if it works. It's storming outside so that usually helps me get sleepy. Thanks!

Ok, I tried the sleepy time tea a few hours ago. It tasted great but it's 4:28am and I'm still awake. It did make me feel very relaxed though. UGH!

Try holding or wearing an amethyst stone at night. They are purple stones, from the quartz family that help with insomnia. I told my ex's mom about it, and she found a ring and has been wearing it and she has sleeping a lot better.

That's interesting. Did she have insomnia for a long period of time? I will try anything. I'm going to ask my doctor about the sleep study. I've been like this for almost a year now. I used to sleep really well at night. I'm really concerned because I have to go with my son up to college next week and also flying out to Detroit in a couple of weeks and I need to be able to focus. UGH!

Yeah, she has. It's worth a try. She told me the next day after wearing it, she looked at the clock and it read 11:30 am. She normally goes to bed late, or early, depending how you look at it, and I think she got close to 7 hours of good rest. Good luck seeing your son of to college!

Thank you! I'm really excited for him. I'm going to try the stone. You never know. The tea really relaxed me last night but I just couldn't fall asleep. My family doesn't want me taking the Ambien but I'm going out of my mind here.

Ok. So tonight I decided I wanted to try to go to sleep early. I was a little tired and thought if I took an Ambien early it would knock me out, it did, for just two hours. Now it's 3:30am and I'm still up. This is crazy.
