Q: Helicobacter Pylori , chronic stomach inflammation
asked by: DoctorQuestion on February 20th, 2009
I am a 30 year old female and have had a number of health problems arise within the last few months.
• moderate to severe upper abdominal pain
• burning stomach pain
• headaches
• nausea and vomiting (approx last 9 months)
• very dry skin (have never had a problem before now)
• cramps in hands/fingers, feet/toes, and sometimes shins
• decreased appetite yet not much sign of weight loss
• become full after eating very little
• bladder doesn’t seem to be emptying properly
• often have difficulty concentrating, thinking clearly, and thinking of words (last couple of years)

I am all of my symptoms in case they are somehow connected. It seems like I keep getting one symptom after another and most have started or gotten worse within the last year. I’m getting discouraged because I am miserable and feel terrible every day. Any help/suggestions would be GREATLY appreciated since I am having trouble getting a diagnosis.

Thanks so much!

Most of the symptoms you reported (upper abdominal pain, stomach pain, nausea and vomiting, decreased appetite, becoming full after eating) might be related to chronic inflammation of the stomach. You might want to test your blood for Helicobacter pylori antibodies. If the results come back positive, your doctor might prescribe adequate therapy with multiple medications.

The chronic inflammation of the stomach might be caused by chronic exposure to psychological stress, which would explain certain of the other symptoms: difficulty concentrating, thinking clearly. Your work conditions (financial analyst) might contribute to this condition.

Do not neglect the fact that even when you take the recommended treatment for Helicobacter pylori, the infection can appear again after a time if you do not learn how to deal with stress. You might want to visit a psychotherapist for stress management.
