I have always had what I assume are rather
heavy periods. I use a menstrual cup, so
I am able to estimate the amount of flow
pretty well. On my heaviest day, I
completely fill my cup (about 20-23 mL)
every two hours. TWO HOURS. That is
actually an improvement. Before I got my
cup, I would leak through a super ultra
tampon hourly, or an hour and a half if I
were lucky. I have only twice made it all
the way through the night without either
a) having to get up and empty/change my
cup/tampon at 3am or b) waking up in a
pool of blood and having to do emergency
laundry. I'm 19, and this has been going
on for 7 years. I tried birth control
(Yaz) for a couple of months, and it
lightened my flow considerably. I was
actually able to get a full night's sleep
on my heaviest night! But I stopped when
my free samples ran out, partially because
it actually made the time between periods
shorter (before birth control it was one
month + one week, about 35-37 days) and
partially because I've become bit of a
natural health nut and I've heard a lot
about how messing with your hormones isn't
as safe in the long-term as we are led to
believe. I'm not sexually active, so
birth control as an anti-pregnancy thing
isn't an issue.
Any advice? Is this relatively normal--do
I need to just buck up and deal with it?
Or is there something else I can do for
some relief?

honestly, my best advice would be birth
control. Have you told a doc about the
bleeding? That's really a lot. I thought
it was a lot when I filled my cup in a
day! Are you taking iron during your
period? It sounds like you need to.
There are also herbal supplements that are
supposed to alleiviate period problems,
but I don't know them off the top of my
head.
