Q: Heavy bleeding with large blood clots

I'm 31 5'2, 280 lbs and I've always had irregular periods.(Unless I'm on the b/c pill). I was told once that I have too much of one hormone, not enough of the other. Some times I'll go 3 months to 12 months without a period.I've had 4 full term healthy pregnancies. My question pertains to this: 9 months ago I was admitted to the hospital because my hemoglobin test was just around 80 due to a very long heavy period, I had been bleeding for a couple months straight but was passing tennis ball sized clots. The doctor did a vaginal ultrasound and found that I had a mass of blood matter that he described as "similar to a failed abortion" and it had to be removed via D&C. I didn't get a period until a few months later, since then I've had irregular heavy periods. The last one I had and this one are lasting more than a week (so far) with like I said big blood clots as frequent as every hour accompanied with the heavy bleeding. At times it will stop or so I think, then if I yell, cough or I get stressed out it will come back full force without warning! I don't even wear a pad anymore because it just leaks everywhere so I have to sit on a towel and not leave my house! DO you have any idea what's going on? Why the heavy bleeding so often? There is 0 % chance of pregnancy as I'm not sexually active. Do you think this is more than a hormone issue? I've thought about my weight being an issue too, BUT I haven't always been this 'obese'...do you recommend I go to the hospital again? I don't have a family doctor to follow my care. I'm feeling shaky and cold sometimes, dizzy, light headed, etc, the classic signs of anaemia. Thanks alot for your help...I really appreciate it. rainbow

It's the hormonal imbalance that is causing your symptoms. My sister has had the same problem since she was a teen. She said some of her clots were so large it felt like she was giving birth! Since you've had four kids have you considered getting a hysterectomy or having the uterine lining frozen or burned? Also, if you're not on a good iron pill you need to start taking one as soone as possible.

thanks
Yes I realize the hormonal imbalance is causing the symptoms, so if I go on the pill, should this rectify the imbalance? And if so, wouldn't the progesterone only pill be the best? I don't believe in getting a hysterectomy done. Having the uterine lining frozen or burned, would that procedure interfere with being able to get pregnant in the future. I still want the opportunity to have another child should I decide to. Maybe after I reached 40 and really shouldn't be having any more kids, I might consider it. Thanks for your help...greatly appreciated. Are you a doctor?

No, I'm not a doctor.
Going on birth control regulates periods for many women but you will also find lots of posts from people that the Pill has no effect on. Also, going on the Pill only helps the symptoms; if you want to have another child this will obviously not help you.
As for which Pill is better, I would assume that the Progesterone- only pill would be a better choice but I have no information to back that up.
Having the uterine lining burned can cause infertility so you should not have the procedure unless you are absolutely sure you are finished having kids.

I think you may need a Hysterectomy...I, also am not a doctor...But I know I had the same feelings of getting cold and you could be anemic....I know I was...Before the Hysterectomy, they had to build my blood up in order to operate....I had to have iron pills and a special diet...I had fibroid tumors like you possibly have...I am assuming you are talking about seeing a OB-GYN and not just a GP doctor...The first thing that they will tell you is to loose some weight...Easy said, but hard to do...

My advice would be loose some weight, get to a OB-GYN and possibly have that surgery....

What you speak about is serious...Stay on top of it...My blood count was dangerously low...

Regards,
Caroline

thank you Caroline
HI there. Thanks for your info too. I have been to the emergency dept and the OB-GYN did the D&C and prescribed the pill, but it wasn't covered so I never had a follow up with him. I felt no need as the bleeding had stopped at that point. I am going to go back to emerg. this weekend. This morning for example, I hadn't bled at all since yesterday late afternoon so I never bothered putting a pad on today. I was out for a bit, then come home and I was yelling upstairs to my son, then BOOM, GUSH all of a sudden the blood starting really flowing, ever since really heavy, I can't seem to leave the house in case I have an unexpected surprise! I dont' get it. What does yelling have to do with the flow? I can't connect the two. Anyway, feedback is great. I don't feel so alone anymore. Thanks again.

Hi Momadorm77: When you yell or get upset you raise your blood pressure...It could cause more stress on your body...This makes the blood flow...I have lived with high blood pressure so this I know...At least it sure does and has with me.....I would think you may have this too...Especially with the stress you are living with and the horrible bleeding...I got so bad that I went to bed with two hospital size napkins on plus two tampons....Also put a towel under me...I, too, passed clots the size of a golf ball...Sometimes I hated to get off of a chair as it seemed like the bottom would fall out...I had my Hysterectomy at 47...I have never looked back...They took my ovaries too...He said they may bother me in the future and he hated to mess with ovarian cancer...At the time I was upset, but found it made absolutely no difference as far as my sexual life....I just pretended that they were there and worked my mind and went back to all my yesterdays...

It would be interesting to see from your blood tests if you are anemic....I hope everything works out great for you, but don't be surprised if there is a Hysterectomy in your future...It is really no big deal...

I am happy you have a good doctor...That is so important...

Caroline

P.S. You are very welcome...You would do the same for me.... Smile
