Im 19 and have been suffering with my periods since a young age. I was born prematurly at 29 weeks and was always a thin child when I was younger then when I hit puberty I started gaining Weight.
I was 11 when I started my periods and from then onwards I never had consistent periods I would have a period one month then go months without one.
I went to the doctors on numerous occasions between the ages of 13 and 17 and told the doctor that something wasn't right but my doctor at the time said that it was fine and that they would sort themselves out.
Eventually at the age of 18 things still werent right so I changed my doctor and she sent me for blood tests and scans and when I went back to the doctor for the results she diagnosed me with PCOS.
I was then refered to a gynaecologist who at my first appointment with him looked at my scans and blood test and said that I definatley had PCOS and that they would try me on metformin.
So I started the metformin and was on them for 5-6 months and they wasnt doing anything so my doctor stopped them after consulting with my gynaecologist.
I then went back to see my gynaecologist for a follow up appointment and he said he was signing me of untill I wanted to become pregnant.
I left it at that for a few months but I still wasn't having regular periods so my doctor put me on the pill while I was on the pill I bleed very heavly and had severe cramps so my doctor took me of them as she felt my body was rejecting the pill.
So it was left there, a few months past and then I went back to my doctor and she refered me back to another gynacologist to see what else we could do.
I went back to the gynacologist and she again told me that she wasn't going to do anything untill I wanted to get pregnant as I wasnt keen to start the pill again because of what happened the first time I was put on it.
So again it was left like that, then a few months after seeing the gynaecologist I began to bleed really heavy every 2 weeks for 7-8 days and this went on for at least 4 months.
My doctor refered me back to the gynaecologist as she wasn't happy with the amount of blood I was loosing as it also caused me to become severly anemic.
I saw the gynaecologist in april 09 and and he gave me some tablets to take for when I started to bleed but since seeing him ive not bleed.
He also sent me for more blood tests to retest me for PCOS as he wasn't 100% sure that I do have PCOS as I have all the other symptoms but obviously PCOS doesn't cause the bleeding that I had for them 4 months. Also I had another scan done and thats not showing cysts anymore where as when I had my very first scan done that showed clear cysts.
Im due to see my gynaecologist again in September but today I recieved a letter from my gynacologist asking me to go for further blood tests to test my Dehydroepiandrosterone sulfate levels also my testerone levels are at 5.3 nmol/L. Has anyone had the same?

When I first started having complications with pcos I was about 16 yrs old and I would have a heavy period one month and not have one for like three months then there was one time I bleed HEAVILY for almost 2 months. and because of the bleeding I was in a massive amount of pain. I also had an ovarian cyst rupture once that landed me in the emergency room. Then I had a period last for three months..... My Doctor gave me progesterone pills to stop the bleeding. Then she started me on yaz birthcontrol after that I had my period every month. I started to change my lifestyle eat better exercise three times a week and take vitamins watch what I eat you know nothing crazy I still throw down every now and then but i'm health conscious. I stopped taking the pill just because of finances yaz is a bit expensive even with insurance and I still continued to get my period regularly which was a big surprise for me and that was two years ago. my doctor told me that losing weight and a healthy lifestyle can combat complications with pcos and it's difficult to do because it is so hard to lose weight with our hormones out of wack and many ppl get discouraged because you work out but don't lose much weight but there are benefits I haven't had any problems with my period for a while now and I am also 19. I decided to make combating pcos a priority for me because I want to have tons of children when I get married and stable and being told that I would have complications getting pregnant was heart-wrenching to me. don't do as your doctors have told you and leave it to when you want to get pregnant and have to take shot and get on vigorous treatments do all you can there are several pcos organizations out there that can offer solutions many doctors don't know much about pcos and only know the methods to get a woman with pcos pregnant. it is a syndrome that can make life so much more difficult so try to find a specialist look online for organizations try for a healthy lifestyle (not saying you aren't I don't know you ^_~ everyone's body is diff what worked for me may not work for you) but I understand just how stressful and irritating it can be when ppl say they can't help you. Good Luck
