Q: Heart palpitations and panic
asked by: DoctorQuestion on October 11th, 2009
I recently went to the doctors because i had been having heart palpitations for about 3-4 days. The doctor done some checks and took blood to test me for an overactive thyroid and cholesteral levels. The results came back negative. After this i started to panic and for reasons unknown to me i began to think about my breathing all the time - this in turn led me to feel alot of anxiety and panic. This comes and goes but now I find myself having upper back/shoulder and chest pain. The pain went away for a few days then came back. Is it anxiety that’s causing this from my stupid thinking about breathing issue? Please help I feel like im going crazy. Thanks

Hello and welcome to eHealth Forum!

Chemicals like adrenaline, alcohol, caffeine, cocaine, amphetamines, and other drugs all cause palpitations. See if you take more of any---usually coffee and alcohol is the culprit. Disease (such as hyperthyroidism and pheochromocytoma) or mitral stenosis, panic disorder all cause palpitations. Hyperthyroidism has been ruled out in your case.

Panic disorders can canuse a number of physical symptoms such as upper back/shoulder pain and chest pain. The pain in upper back/shoulder can also be due to stress on muscles, pinched cervical spinal nerves and/ or wrong posture.
Palpitations may be associated with heart problems (which can cause chest pain), anemias and low blood pressure. A 12 lead EKG should be done.

If you have cough and are taking medicines that contain asthalin or terbutaline then the palpitations can be a side effect of the drugs. Cough can also cause pain in upper back/shoulder and chest pain. Since a confirmed diagnosis cannot be given on net please discuss these possibilities with your doctor once. Hope this helps. Take care!
