Q: Heart murmur and high blood pressure

I was just diagnosed with a heart murmur yesterday and while I was at the doctor I had high blood pressure (140/90). I told her I always get nervous when I'm at the doctor. So she is setting me up with a 24-hour blood pressure monitor that I have to wear from 3:30 pm today to 3:30 pm tomorrow. I also have to go for an EKG on Monday and blood tests to check my throid and chlesterol level next week.

I'm a little bit nervous about it because a lot of people keep saying "don't worry, murmurs are normal and it's probably nothing." But I keep reading that if you have high blood pressure and have a murmur it could be something more serious. I'm going to stress about it this weekend until I so on Monday. Even then I probably won't know anything until I see my doctor again on April 28th. Can someone who's been through this try and make me feel better by explaining what they went through? I'm really nervous and scared.

Do you usually get high blood pressure when you are at the doctor's office?
A 24 hour monitor will answer for sure if you have high blood pressure, or you have, only, white coat hypertension. I guess you just have the last one.
Did you have a simple blood count test?
Are you usually short of breath?
Do you have frequent spells of dizziness?
What is your normal heart rate?
Have you noticed some heat intolerance, increased nervousness or more frequent bowel movements recently?

I find I'm more nervous when I'm at the doctor and that's when I usually have my blood pressure checked and it's usually high. I'm having a blood test done next week. I do get shortness of breath easily but I figured it's because I'm out of shape. I don't feel dizzy often. Maybe occasionally like if I stand up too fast, but I figure that happens to everyone. I'm not too sure of my heart rate. I think it's about 90/min. Haven't really noticed any heat intolerance, nervousness or more bowel movements.

Were you diagnosed with white coat hypertension?
Have you received your blood count test results?
Do you often feel tired and sleepy?
Heart murmur can be due to anemia.

Waiting for your post!

I won't know any of my test results until April 28. That is when I see the doctor next. I always feel tired and sleepy. I work in an office on a computer. I try to get up every so often just to stretch and get my eyes off my monitor, but when I get home at about 4:30, I am so tired I usually fall asleep before my fiance gets home (around 6:00).

I know my mom is anemic (low iron) but I donate blood on a regular basis and I never have a problem with my iron level. I even take a multi-vitamin with minerals included. If it's an under-active thyroid (hypothyroidism) it would explain alot, but that means I'll have to go on meds for the rest of my life.

LadyKitten!
Have you got your results already?

Most of the time heart murmurs are normal and do not indicate that there is anything wrong with the heart. Anemia, high blood pressure, fever, or an overactive thyroid gland, are usual conditions, not related to heart, that are causing heart murmur.

Apparantly my results showed that everything's fine, except my high blood pressure. My doctor told me that the heart murmur is nothing I should worry about, and could possibly go away if I lose weight which I need to do to get my blood pressure down. So I guess it's time to go purchase a bike and pull out the roller skates.
