Q: Hearing "loud music"

My son, aged 8, has been suffering intermittantly with what he describes as 'loud music' and 'everything around him going too fast'. This does not happen during the day but most often once he has gone to bed.

He wakes terrified and clutching his head saying he is hearing 'loud music'. He is crying and confused. He can't describe the 'music' other than saying it sounds like 'devil music'. At the same time as this is happening, he says everything around him is 'going too fast'. He says although he is walking slowly, it seems as if his legs are going 10-to-the-dozen. I was stroking his back trying to calm him last night and he said it feels like you're rubbing my back very very fast.

Does anyone know what this could be? I have taken him for an EEG which was normal.

I would really appreciate any help as he is terrified when going through one of these episodes and it's really scary to watch.

Many thanks,
Lindy

my daughter has the same terrifying complaints, also at night. People are speaking too fast, sounds are too loud, touching is too fast. I think this is a result of too much visual stimulus during the day and the brain needs to recalibrate, resync itself. I read something that Dr. Rodolfo Llinas wrote; see NOVA Online, "The Electric Brain". Or Dr. David Eagleman, "Brain Time". Any other suggestions? I hope our children are OK.
