I am on birth control pills. I have been on them going on 5 years now. I am just wondering if it is healthy to be on them that long, or if I should let my body take a break. Also this month I had 12 pills left in my pack and I got my period, I finished the pills, and went onto the placebo pills, when I was on the placebo pills, my period stopped, why is this??

Name of the game, B.C. pills
First off, I'm not a doctor but I've been on B.C. pills long like you, in fact one year and six months longer. I was off in between the first eight months and the next five and half years.

If you missed a pill during your pack and got your period during the pack and then finished the 12 pills and got your period, It's because you missed a pill. Your period stopped when the placebo pill started because you finished your period in the days it would have normally occurred. Your body was temporarily confused. You may spot at any given time in your next pack as well since it thinks it's suppose to the period a week earlier.

If you started a new B.C. in the past three months and you had your period this month then you may just be spotting.

If you have done neither of the above, you may want to go get checked out by your GYN.

On being on birth control pills for a really long time here are some wise words from an acupuncturist.

Originally your body was a clean slate as a infant. No free radicals, no diet malnutrition, and no allergies. As you grow older and your body develops, it learns and conditions itself. Having a high fat or low fat diet, high sodium or low sodium diet, smoking or drinking, not getting enough exercise all alters the normal state of your body.

Being healthy is keeping your body at equilibrium. Healthy varied diet, regular exercise, and organs functioning at good levels. Western medicine is primarily chemically dependent medicine. Asian medicine is holistic, herb and root based, pressure points, needles, magnets, things that are non-invasive and does not cause dependency from your body. It is not recommended to be on any kind of one medication for longer than three years. Your body can be conditioned easily and three years is long enough for you body to be reset. The amount of time you spend on medication may be the time it takes your body to recover from medication.

Having reiterated what an acupuncturist told me: I have to say I was on the pill for a very long time as I stated above. I was on the pill for six years steady and stopped using it eight months ago. I still feel the effects of the pill. My acupuncturist told me she could stop my acne, regulate my periods, and reduce my testosterone levels all with just needle point therapy instead of b.c. pills. I believe it can work. She's already fixed my liver and pancreas functions with just an herb root drink.
