Welcome to EHEALTH forum!
Early morning awakening headaches, can be due to different conditions.
Serious ones that can lead to that symptoms are brain tumors, sleep apnea, and severe high blood pressure.

Was the onset of the headache sudden and severe?
Is this headache getting worse over time?
Do the headaches get worse with coughing, exercise, or with a change in position such as bending or kneeling?
Are you experiencing hearing problems such as ringing or buzzing sounds or hearing loss?

ref headaches wen waking
sometimes they can start suddenly and be strong , others i can tell wen they are starting and i have time to take some painkillers. The pain isnt getting worse and i have no other symptoms in my head. The pain can be anywhere but is mostly in the back of my neck these days i also feel pain in my neck when i lay on my front with my head raised and feel muscular pain wen i move it around sometimes, this pain isnt strong just feels like i have pulled a muscle slightly, and my neck isn't stiff. today i went to the doc's again to see a different doc and she says that i have a viral infection as my white blood count is slightly low but this has been for 3 weeks approx , can a viral infection last this long do ui think?

If I try to think as your doctor, about a viral infection, I must ask for an extra information.
Have you experienced fever, too?
My advice is to pay attention on these symptoms.
If you start noticing that the headache is getting worse over time, and is accompanied with other symptoms, like visual and hearing problems, difficulties with walking and coordination, and if it's always followed with nausea and vomiting, you should ask for an extra medical attention.

On the other side, this could be just a tension type of headache (feeling like a tight band is strapped around the head, with pain symptoms worse in the scalp area, around the temples, and the back of the head), and if you have it for longer that two weeks for several consecutive months it needs to be considered as a chronic tension headache.

Morning headache and tension headache symptoms may be triggered by: colds and flu, depression, excessive caffeine consumption, working in one position for long periods, poor posture, stress, eye strain, extended car drives, smoking, nasal congestion and sinusitis.

Best wishes!

cofused now!
hi thanx for answering, i have just seen my doctor as she got my bloods bak and they say a thyroid problem (graves disease) i had in the past has re-arisen. i have been having a large number of symptons that point to thatfor a similar time as i have had the headaches but i have never had headaches assosiated with this before so dont think it is a symptom.
She says it is possible so has put me on some meds and wants me to wait and see if the symptoms disappear. anyway i will try it and see wot happens

Grave's disease is a long-term disease, and in more advanced stage can cause nausea and vomiting as symptoms.
Also, this condition can lead to hypertension, that can be manifested with headaches, nausea and vomiting.
Hyperthyroidism in Graves disease usually causes sleeping problems that can result in tension headaches occurring after awakening.
Headaches can be a symptom of Graves disease.
