I did two rounds of the HCG shots and have been off for about 1 1/2 months now. I am losing my hair like crazy! It is very depressing and very alarming! I have been wondering if it was from the HCG, and now I am convinced that it is based on reading all of this. What I want to know is if it ever stops and starts to grow back and get full again. Has anyone gotten to that point yet? Or is it gone forever?
DO NOT USE HCG unless you don't care if you lose hair.
Finished first (and only) round September 2009. November I noticed I had lost a LOT of hair (50-60%). Not sure when it started but I had a lot of hair to begin with. I'm convinced it's the HCG ............. Slowed down somewhat (June 2010) but haven't notice any has grown back.
Those who sell/pedal hct do not tell you this or simply use the 'fast weight lose' statement.
I'm a nurse practitioner who has been researching whether or not I want to prescribe HCG. I've been looking and benefits and risks, both objectively from the literature and subjectively from speaking with patients and reading sites such as this.
I thought I'd offer some reassurance for those of you who are experiencing hair loss. I believe that the timing of the hair loss in relation to the "second round" of HCG is coincidence. It seems much more likely that the hair loss is secondary to any rapid weight loss program, not just the HCG diet. You see, when the body senses "starvation", it automatically starts shutting down any body function that it thinks is not absolutely necessary. Hair growth is, yes you guessed it, not considered to be vital to survival and is the first to go. The body "shunts" nutrients away from the hair follicles and towards all vital organs.
Normally, hair is in a constant cycle of growth and death. Hair starts to grow from the hair follcle and will actively grow for somewhere between 6 months to 2 years, but then will spontaneously "die." This is perfectly normal and our hair does it every single day. After death of the hair strand, it will stay in tact for another several weeks, before shedding. The shedding is painless. If you take a look at the "root" of the hair follicle which has been shed, there is not a healthy and bulbous root, instead it is just looks like the hair stand was cut at the end.
This process is ongoing and a certain percentage of anyone's hair is always in the shedding stage. What happens with rapid weight loss is that all the hair's follicles are shifted into the shedding stage simultaneously. This is why handfuls of hair are on your pillow in the morning, in your hairbrush, in your hands after washing your hair, and all over your floor when blowdrying your hair. This loss goes on for several weeks and there is nothing you can do to stop it because the hair follicle has already entered into it's "dormant" stage and has started shedding.
If I may, I'd like to spend a moment addressing the psychological effect of hair loss, from both a professional and personal view. Six years ago, I experienced this myself, after being on the South Beach Diet. The diet itself was great, but because I lost over 20 lbs in about 5 weeks (which is considered rapid weight loss), but I started losing my hair about 6-8 weeks later. The loss was devastating and, yes, the loss was severe. I wore a wig for 4 months and extensions for the next 2 years. I would avoid brushing or washing my hair because the amount of hair loss was increased during this time and was psychologically traumatic. I saw every healthcare provider friend of mine I could, each from various specialties. I had thousands of dollars of labwork drawn, but everything was normal. I tried Rogaine also, but quit using it after about a week because I noticed on the box that it said the use of Rogaine could make hair loss worse in the initial treatment phase. I simply did not have any reserve of hair left to withstand the initial treatment phase.
So, what does this mean for you? The BAD news is that your hair will thin because many of the hair follicles have been shifted into the shedding stage at the same time. The GOOD news is that it comes back. After about 2-3 months, you will start to notice that the hair will start to regrow. It takes a few years for the hair to completely renormalize where you're back to normal shedding, BUT IT DOES COME BACK.
Oh my, thank you so much! This is the best news I have heard. I have a half dollar bald spot on the back of my head and it has been so distressing for me. I figured it out that it was from being on the hcg diet. I hope it comes back sooner than 2-3 years! Thanks for sharing this!
These are the side effects they don't tell you about when they are charging you $900 and up to do HCG shots. I experienced a horrible itchy rash on my chest and back while taking the shots. Also experienced significant hairloss 3 months after going off the shots. Liver enzymes were elevated and had cervical polyps. Coincidence or effects of hcg shots?
I am finishing up my second round of HCG. I have had great success with adding foods this second round with still good weight loss. However, I am loosing my hair at a rapid rate. I can't say it's the low call cause I am eating more then I should and I take a vitamin. None the less the hair loss is still happening. I need the weight off more then the hair and I am hoping that when I stop this round that it will slow down. At that point I will have to see if it improves before I do another round. FYI I am doing the drops.
I have recently finished my 2nd round of HCG. My weight loss has progressed gradually; however, not at the rate that the HCG program would have produced if I had followed the diet to the "T." I've still been successful and the amount of weightloss is not a complaint. I'm far better than I was and 49 lbs. is very good over a 20 week span. I've taken a Multi-Vitamin and a prenatal type vitamin as I noticed my hair was thinning and falling out at a rapid pace. It continues to fall out and I've been off the HCG now for almost 2 weeks. I, like many others in this blog, am very concerned as I once had thick, beautiful hair. All the information and comments above have been helpful and confirmed my fears that the HCG may indeed be the cause of the rapid hair loss. My concern now is, how do I turn the hair loss around? Will I ever have thick hair again? Are there any success stories for cessation of hair loss and re-growth of hair? If so, please advise what methods, etc. were done to alter this negative side effect of HCG. TJ
Have any of you had experience with HCG prescription cream and hair loss? Most of what I have read has been talking specifically about the injections. I bought the book today that my doctor asked me to read upon on......I have an appt with him later on to discuss going on the HCG DIET...I am so paranoid of hair loss....most it seems are losing 40-60%, that is SIGNIFICANT.
I posted in March, i just wanted to give a follow up. I only did 1 round of HCG drops (sublingual). I followed the diet religiously and lost 20 lbs in 30 days. Hair loss started nearly one month after my last dose. It was really bad, to the point i had to start wearing a wide headband. By the time the hair loss had stopped, my part had gotten super wide, i had bald patches and my hairline moved north slightly. It took three months before it stopped. Most hair loss occurred on the crown of my head and around the temples. New hair is growing in now most noticeable on the hairline which has a bunch of baby hair. I know some say it is because of the rapid weight loss, and maybe it is.... however, i've experienced dramatic weight loss in one month before and I never lost my hair. I believe it was the HCG. I was on vitamins the whole time including Biotin, but it didn't matter in the least. I never tried a second round. I'd rather be over weight than bald.
I am finishing a second round of hcg drops. I have lost 35 lbs total and have never felt better both physically and mentally. I have experienced no hair loss above and beyond the normal daily loss. I am a hair stylist and have recommended hcg drops to hundreds of clients and friends and I watch their hair for loss, shine, strength etc. I have yet to witness any of the negative side effects so many have complained about. Not to say their complaints are not valid but, the percentage of complaints are by far lower than read here.
I was on the HCG diet for 6 weeks-injections.
And too have noticed hair loss. I took a multi-vitamin daily since I started the diet and continue to do so~its been a month now and still have hair loss but it seems less & less daily. My hair loss did not start until a couple of weeks after my last injection. I think it is so important to continue with the vitamins and eating healthy in order to obviously maintain your weight and diminish the hair loss.
I have done the HCG drops for 2 rounds and 3-4 weeks after the last round have had significant hair loss - searched the internet and ended up here. I touch my hair and it falls out - the best explanation was the nurse - saying it is already in progress. I would NOTrecommend the drops based on this side effect alone - if you can lose weight in a more moderate pace and KEEP all your hair - it would be better.
Since May, I have been on HCG for several rounds (small ones due to travel) have lost over 50lbs and I had thick hair. Not so much now, it has been falling out at a steady pace. I know it is due to the rapid weight loss (would probably happen with any diet with quick weight loss), and I have started to take an additional multi-vitamin and biotin, but I know that if I want my hair to eventually stop falling out, I will have to stop the HCG. It is a shame because I still have more to lose, but I don't want to lose more hair.
I am on my first round of HCG, I had to stop for 2 weeks b/c I'm on antibiotics and I have found the HCG not to work during this time. Now my hair is falling out by the handfuls. This not only bad for me, but I grow my hair to use as wigs for cancer paitents. HELP!
Hi, I can totally relate, my hair is thick and curly and i started the HCG some months ago but stopped at a week, i started it again on sunday and today i noticed my hair falling out in my hands like really bad!! Im continously passing my hands through my hair and its just coming out!! Im on day 4 and im considering if to continue or to stop the HCG, right now my hair feels so thin which is quite unusual for me.....what should i do, can anyone tell me if i should wait and continue the HCG?
Me too!! I was on the shots for 43 days and lost 22 lbs. And, I must say I was very impressed. 2 weeks prior to the end of my first round I discovered that I was losing much more hair than normal. Since then--it has only progressed. It's been 8 weeks since I had my last shot and the hair is falling out in massive quantities. I cannot touch my head without 3-5 hairs being lost. I sure wish someone had warned me about this terrible side effect. I've been taking all the vitamins and to no avail. Be warned! You WILL lose hair on this diet.
My daughter 37 years old...went on hcg diet ...2

last time she took the drops for the hcg diet was

growth of hair on her scalp??????????? oct. 15,2010
I had the same symptoms and got in to see a dermatologist. He said it was more than likely the HCG, but he was not at all concerned (unlike me, a nervous wreck!) I am still losing some hair, but I have quite a bit of new baby hair growth around my forehead and temple. My husband sees new hair on the underside. I was a diet dropout--only took about an ounce under the tongue for about three weeks. After seeing the dermatologist, I calmed down quite a bit. While I'm still losing hair, I do see quite a bit of new growth, so I'm not worried for the long term. I calm myself by telling myself it's just hair--it's growing back--it's not a fatal disease. So, let's quit taking this drug and put these people out of business. Your hair WILL grow back!
Yes the hcg diet def makes your hair shed my hair was really thick and healthy me nor my beutician couldnt figure out why it was coming out in globs, when i thought about gettin back on the hcg. that popped in my head, and i changed my mind my hair has finaally stopped shedding. but i had to do weekly deep conditionong tratments, i will never do that diet again
