Q: Hairs on scrotum

30-40% of my hairs on my scrotum are covered or half covered by a white hard thick substance that has a bad strong smell. I take a shower 1-2 times a day and I always dry really well. I've been using hair shampoo to try and get rid of it but it's not working. I wear boxer briefs and I usually workout everyday, so I do sweat a lot down there but I always wash after I work out. I also cannot scrap the substance off without pulling the hair out of my scrotum. I just want to maker sure this isn't something dangerous, and find out how to fix it.

Oh and I'm 16 years old.

You know, this sounds to me like some kind of yeast infection. Is there any pain or itch? I think you should google yeast infections for men and see what it says about that. Check and see if your symptoms are similar to a yeast infection and then you need to get some cream or go see a doctor. I suggest the doctor. Have you recently been sexually active? You can get a yeast infection from your own sweat or from intercourse with a female who has a yeast infection. I could be wrong but do show this to a parent and/or make a doctors appt. if it doesn't go away soon.

it's a possible that you have something called Trichomycosis axillaris- it's a baterial that builds up on your public hair on underarm hair, and it comes with a foul odor.
i'll email you a website that talks about it.

I was doing some research on this too and found that it's actually pretty common among men who sweat alot. I read the same thing, that it's probably a bacteria from sweat. Some men shave the hair and after washing every day it eventually goes away.

I have tried shaving my hair off and I wash frequently but it still comes back. Is there any other safe way of getting rid of this? I do sweat a lot because I'm at the stage of puberty where I sweat when I'm cold or warm or normal. I also run 5 days a week and workout at the gym every other day. Thanks so much for all your help already.

Trichomycosis axillaris is a benign condition that does not have any complications. The fastest way to get rid of the problem is to clip the affected hairs or shave the area. Agents used to help treat and prevent the problem include benzoyl peroxide gel or wash formulations and topical antibacterial preparations of clindamycin or erythromycin. Antiperspirants are also useful because they reduce sweating. Keep the underarm clean and dry to prevent recurrences of the condition.

Daily cleansing with soap and water and application of benzoyl peroxide generally cures the infection. Regular use of antiperspirants aids in prevention. Topical erythromycin is occasionally required to eliminate the infection.
