The hair loss condition runs in families and has a strong genetic component to its causation. It is believed to be related to an excess of male hormones in the body.
The hair starts thinning usually around the age of twelve, but it may be delayed up to the age of 40. Up to 50 % of the population may have experienced some degree of hair loss before entering into the 6th decade of their life.
