Q: Hair loss and PTSD ?

This is my latest PTSD symptom.

I've always had fine hair, but in the last six months it's been coming out in huge amounts.

I'm supposed to be seeing a specialist (finally) next week. But so much damage is already done. As a female in the film/television industry, this trauma has devastated me socially, emotionally, physically and mentally.

And now my hair is falling out.

Has anybody else experienced this? Do medications really bring your hair back? I've heard that some PTSD patients never get a full head of hair again.

Anybody out there?

S.

Hey S.,
There are many reasons why hair can start to thin or even fall out. The first, and most obvious is the genetic factor; even though women are 5 times less likely to suffer from hair loss than men, it is still a reality for many women. That being said, chronic stress is another common factor for hair loss, as well as other health complications. Post-traumatic stress disorder is a funny thing that is not completely understood. It is clear that the cause of ptsd is the inability for the mind to come to terms with a traumatic event an individual has experienced. Since some of the symptoms can include chronic stress, anxiety, panic, and other symptoms that can wreak havoc on our health, then it is possible that it can contribute to hair loss. However I would consult a physician or other medically qualified person before making that determination.
I hope this helps,
-J

As a PTSD victim of abuse, i can tell you your hair will grow back fully in a very vibrant healthy way. The same thing happened for me, after I had lost who knows how much. Don't worry, it will come back.
