Q: gum recovery time

Hi all,

I've had gingivitis for many years (I'm 37 yo male) because I had horrible dental hygiene. I've never flossed, and even brushing has been spotty at best.

I went to the dentist a couple of months ago because I noticed a part of one of my gums between two teeth (the "toe" of the gum that drops down between the two teeth) had separated and was sort of a loose "flap". Not the whole gum; just the lower, oh, I'd guess around 2mm or so. Not enough to panic, but enough to realize, hey, I'd better go get a cleaning done.

She did a full cleaning, and I was scared enough by the episode to start really following proper dental hygiene. I'm proud to say that I've flossed every day since then, and have brushed every day as well. My gums, which used to be red, are now pink and a LOT healthier-looking.

However--that one spot where the gum was a "flap" is still like that. It's also still slightly red (although it's not as bad as it was when I first noticed it). My question is: how long will it take for that to heal? Will it EVER heal, or do I likely need some sort of interventionary measure? I don't want to go back to the dentist just to find out, if I can avoid paying that....

Thanks!
Dave

A long time...This I know..I had an infected root canal that they did not find in the X-ray...Only when the pain was so terrible that I couldn't stand it, did I insist that they pull it out...They did...Under it they found an infection that had eaten into my jaw bone..What I went through in that chair I wouldn't wish on any enemy...I was awake three nights moaning...Took months for my jaw to cover up with skin and two months on anti-biotics...Believe me, it will take time...

Good luck,
Caroline

Thanks Caroline....I'm very sorry to hear you went through such an ordeal. I have to confess that I'm not sure how that relates to my question about gums healing from gingivitis though...

Years ago, I saw a Periodontist for the very same problem that you speak about...The flap area did heal, but it took time...She gave me some special medication to use in that area...This was after she did a minor surgery and cleaned it out...It was a prescription...She also gave me some of the best advice that I have ever been given...She said strengthen your gums...When you are driving a car, brush your teeth without toothpaste...Just do the down motion...That and flossing are the best that you can do...

The root canal paragraph was to inform people that they can infect under a treated tooth...Sorry I added it to your post....

Take care...

ah, okay that makes more sense Smile thanks for clarifying. Do you happen to have an estimate of approximately how long it took to heal? Are we talking one month, six months, two years......?

Thanks...and thanks for the "dry brushing" tip, wasn't aware of that one!
