Q: Green stools and IBS
asked by: DoctorQuestion on July 25th, 2009
I have IBS for the last 4 years and have up and down times. This last week however has been really hard. I have been in loads of pain on and off and had really loose movements. Then the last couple of days my stools have turned dark green. This is so new to me. I am concerned though because I am having about 1500 calories a day, I have a good exercise routine and drink a good amount of fluids. and yet I feel like I am gaining weight. Also I passed urine this morning and it had such an odd smell. Almost like the one you get when you have cystitis although I do not appear to have it. Also that to was almost green in color. I do not feel ill just a little tired, can you give me any suggestions as to what might be wrong?

A green stool is one of the symptoms that might be seen in irritable bowel syndrome. The bile from the liver turns green at one point of its metabolic degradation. It changes the color further, but if it is expelled too fast due to increased bowel movement (as might be in diarrhea-dominant irritable bowel syndrome), then the stool might turn out green. Other conditions that might cause the stool to turn out green might include: bacterial overgrowth, increased use of antibiotics that might affect the bacterial intestinal flora, laxative use, etc.

You might want to visit your family doctor for a physical examination and a stool culture. You might be referred to a specialist for internal diseases, which might need additional examinations (colonoscopy, liver tests).
