Q: GERD / acid reflux foods ?

Good morning all,

I've recently been dx with gerd, a hiatal hernia, colities and ulcers in my colon and stomach. Obviously, I'm looking to change my diet to more tolerable foods. Lately, I've been eating a LOT of salmon (I have other issues, too), soups, jello, etc.

Do any of you have any recipes for gerd/acid reflux? Any foods you can suggest? Drinks?

Thanks and a blessed Monday to you!

To treat GERD, you can change your diet. Well done! You can avoid foods and medications that lower LES tone (fats and chocolate) and foods that may irritate the damaged lining of the esophagus (citrus juice, tomato juice, and probably pepper), for one.

I did find a diet guide from the University of Illinois:

Does that help?

What a wonderful site! Thank you so much for sharing, fickle. Being I love to create and cook in the kitchen, I've already started playing with some ideas.

Last night I took a package of dry herb stuffing and mixed it up with one egg and two cans of salmon (drained). I made simple patties out of the mix and baked at 350 for about 30 mins. Waalaa, yummy salmon patties like my grandma used to make with one exception...they were baked instead of fried.

I'll get the hang of it. It just takes time and a little creativity.

Thanks again for sharing the link. I now have it bookmarked.

Smile

I'd also suggest that you consider calcium, magnesium, and potassium supplements. These minerals are known to have an alkalizing effect on your body by binding up the stomach acid. Additionally, herbal medicines like pineapple and papaya help in aiding digestion by adding natural enzymes to break down foods int he stomach. Aloe Vera helps in the healing of the intestinal tract and Chamomile is said to relieve esophageal irritation.

Think alkaline foods!

Thanks for the tips. I'll tell you what I have added as supplements so far: Aloe Vera, Mega B Stress (time-released), Probiotics, Guggul (and ayurvedic herb for cholesterol) and Vitamin E.

I also picked up cans of kidney beans, Mary's organic crackers, Garden of Life Perfect Food bars, Bumblebee bar and Paul Newman's pretzels. I do have bananas and I eat one every day.

This is all new and I am researching and purchasing my way through, so it seems....LOL. Honestly, it's been a long time coming. I've also been reading up on Ashwagandha (another ayurvedic herb) and will be picking it up next trip to the health food store.

On top of GERD/hiatal hernia, I have heart and cholesterol issues to contend with as well as Rheumatoid Arthritis and painful back problems so I'm doing HEAVY research so I can be mentally-equipped to turn my health around.
