Genital warts, can appear as a multiple growths, cluster of growths or as a single lesion.
The visual examination, often, is enough to determine the diagnosis of genital warts.
Sometimes, a biopsy of the growth is performed to confirm the diagnosis and to determine the strain of the HPV.
You shouldn't be ashamed since this condition is the most prevalent STD.
Also, it is important to know that you may have been infected for a long period like several years before getting the symptoms.
So, not having the growths, doesn't exclude HPV infection in your boyfriend.
He may even transmitted this infection to you, since the asymptomatic infection can be present for years.
It is a good idea for him to get checked, too, even he doesn't have the growth.
HPV infection can be treated (the growths), but, not cured.
Using protection during all forms of sex (including oral sex, since genital warts can be transmitted to the mouth and throat) is important (sometimes infection can be transmitted, even the protection is used, because the viral particles can affect the skin that can't be covered).
Best wishes!
