Q: Genital herpes and vaginal birth

I have a very important question. I have genital herpes. I am currently taking acyclovir. I am due Sept 5. I am going to birth at home as long as I do not have an active outbreak at delivery. IF I do have an outbreak then I will go in to have a c-section.

My question is: Do doctors test the newborn for herpes after birth, even if the mother didnt have an active outbreak? Do babies need to be tested as a precaution? What is the process at birth?

I have had it for 6 years by the way.

Alot has changed since I had my last child (I don't have herpes). However I do recall during one of my prenatal classes that if a woman has herpes (but not an active outbreak) that the newborn would be given eye drops to prevent blindness. And it also depends on when herpes were contracted, etc. Since you contracted it before you became pregnant then your child risk has decreased.

How far are you from the hospital? I would hate for you to be in labor at home and then discover that you are in the process of a breakout...

I found the website below regarding herpes and pregnancy. I believe the rest of your answers can be found there.
