I am a special education teacher I am trying to find a possible diagnosis for a student of mine. I believe that what he has is genetic because he has an older sister with some of the same traits but just to a lesser degree. My student is in fifth grade.
Physically, the student is short but with elongated skinny limbs and his stomach sticks out. He doesn't eat much, which could be a contributing factor to his size. He is not toilet trained. From seeing him urinate in the shower, I know that when he goes it comes out in short spurts, not a continuous stream like most men. He seems to have problems with motor planning. I have taught him a few ASL signs and he knows what the sign is supposed to look like but is unable to imitate me accurately.
Cognitively, I think he is at least of average intelligence. He is nonverbal but can type messages on his electronic talker when he wants to. He can count and do basic math operations. He can match sight words to pictures up to at least an 8th grade level but has very poor reading comprehension (2nd-3rd grade level). He can use a computer independently. At the beginning of the school year he did not initiate ANYTHING and wouldn't do anything until someone told him to. He is improving in this area but he's still got a long way to go.
Does anyone have any idea what this could be? He does not have a medical diagnosis.
