Broken Fifth Metarsal Tranverse Fracture at Base - Help Needed

I need advice. I broke my foot last week. Ortho took X-rays and put me in walking boot and crutches. WB as tolerated which is pretty much not at all. Even though I have stayed off for the most part due to pain, the pain has gotten progressively worse. I do not know why and am wondering if I should go the ER. The pain is almost unbearable unless I am not moving. I called the nurse and she said to take more Tramadol but I am almost out and am thinking maybe I need a surgery. Is it normal for the pain to get worse after a week. How long will it last? Thanks in advance for any guidance.

Hi, and thanks for your query on eHealth forum!

If the pain is worsening, then the broken pieces are rubbing against each other. The ortho boot may not be a good fit. You may need a closed reduction to bring the broken edges together. Please re-consult your ortho—you may need a fresh set of X-rays. Hope this helps. Take care!
