Q: General Blood Pressure Issue

Hi there,

I have a general quesiton about blood pressure issues and wonder if someone can help.

I am 38 years old and have a medicated blood pressure usually between 160-170 over 95-100. I have been taking ramipril (only 5mg) for some time. In addition I have recently been given 50mg Metroprolol and a nitro spray due to some minor chest pains. General health is good, not overweight, dont drink or smoke.

Anyway, my question is this, over the last week or so my bp has been sporadically elevated to about 210 over 110 for periods of about an hour then it returns to the pre-elevated medicated levels. There is no real pattern to this as it happens at rest as well as during normal activities. I know when it is happening (I think) because I get a headache and feel like my eyeballs are being poked from the inside of my head - almost the same as a nitro headache but without the nitro !! I have an appointment with my cardiologist next week to discuss the chest issues and guess the bp will be discussed also.

I was just wondering what could cause sporadic blood pressure flucuations like that.

Any thoughts would be appreciated.

Many thanks.

I've read some reviews on Metroprolol and most patients were saying that the drug has elevated their blood pressure. Most doctors are not aware of this. As a person that was on 50mg Metroprolol for years and it worked well like 120/80, I now find it not working for me no longer. So I've switched to 100mg Toprol XL and clonidine 1.0mg and found my bp going down from 192/112, which I'm trying to get it back to normal. However, I am battling with tiredness although my bp is going down. You may need to try another bp pill with Metroprolol until it starts to work normal again.

Hope this helps!
