Q: Gastrointestinal infections and bleeding ulcers
asked by: DoctorQuestion on May 4th, 2009
Few weeks ago, I think I got food poisoning that caused me to vomit and my stomach acid was burning my esophagus so I went to the hospital and they gave me intravenous plus gravol. I got my urine and blood tested and doctor said I was fine. The very next day I felt bloated and burped a lot and went to a clinic and the doc. prescribed an antacid and made me do an upper GI xray which they didnt find anything not even an ulcer, this was a week later. Few days after the bloating stopped but my intestines were making noses and I felt a massive pain in lower center of my stomach and also pain on the right side of my intestines. Drinking water or eating aggravates the pain and after meal my stomach would feel like its sagging as if it was a balloon filled with water. I feel really uncomfortable doesn't matter what position I am be in, even when I am sleeping. I think it maybe an ulcer or possibly a bleeding peptic ulcer. Would anyone would have a clue. Please help me identify. Thanks

It is possible that the symptoms you reported might be related to a gastrointestinal infection. You might want to have a stool culture with antibiogram in order to determine the exact cause and the most effective treatment.

One of the symptoms of a bleeding ulcer include a very dark, almost black stool. The black color comes from the digested blood. If the blood is digested then it comes from the upper gastrointestinal tract. Otherwise, fresh blood indicates bleeding closer to the anus. An ulcer cannot be ruled out based on the symptoms you reported. However, it seems that the presence of a bleeding ulcer is not very likely.
