Hi.

I have had acid reflux for the past five years. It had been treated with a few courses PPI's over the course of those five years.

Now after my last bad attack, which was due to drinking alcohol, I believe I developed gastritis as well.

Anyway six months ago after that attack I got another course of PPI's and quit drinking; total abstinence, and for the last six months and I have been fine and clear of reflux and gastritis.

But I stupidly took a course of OTC ibuprofen and after a few days of the course the reflux/gastritis reappeared. I knew that Ibuprofen can irritate the stomach wall, but thought I would be ok. I stopped the Ibuprofen on Monday and my symptoms have been getting better day by day - I don't have the sensation of something stuck in my throat any more and my burps are subsiding.

I'm wondering should I leave going to the doctors and see if it settles down or go and get some more PPI's?

Can Gastritis/Reflus settle down naturally? My flare up isn't due to alcohol this time, just Ibuprofen, and doesn't feel so bad.

Cheers.

If you are frequently getting acid reflux symptoms you should see your doctor. It could be the sign of something worse.

Is it gastritis or esophagitis you're feeling? If it's reflux related, it's probably the latter: the acid having attacked the esophagus will have caused inflammation (= esophagitis).

Prolonged esophagitis + more acid reflux can lead to the cellular changes known as Barrett's Esophagus which can be a pre-cursor to cancer.

So the message is, if you are experiencing heartburn type symptoms more than three times a week for more than three weeks, have it checked. You may need an endoscopy (EGD) to check the lining of your esophagus.
