I need to know how soon after gastric bypass surgery can I drink a small amount (4 shots in 3 hours)of alcohol. It is important that I be passed out once a month to be relaxed enough to get a chiropractic adjustment. I am not a drinker but medications have stopped working for me and the alcohol does. My surgery is 5 weeks out and my weight loss has been minimal. Up 11/2 lbs in the last few days. got blood work yesterday.

It is best for you to avoid alcohol consumption after the gastric bypass surgery completely.
Because the structure of gastrointestonal tract is changed in bariatric patients, the absorption and metabolism of alcohol in these patients is significantly changed, too, and in such fashion as to increase alcohol sensitivity.
Bariatric patients have rapid alcohol absorption and higher alcohol blood levels, so, they feel the effects of alcohol after having only a few sips of their drink (the effects are like after drinking large amounts of alcohol, and only small amounts of alcohol can be toxic for the body).
The use of alcohol after surgery may cause irreversible brain and nerve damage, coma, and possible death by inhibiting the absorption of important vitamins.
Alcohol consumption can interfere with surgery effectiveness.
Ones that will consume alcohol will have minimal weight loss after surgery.
Be aware about possible addiction switch, that often occurs in bariatric patients (switching food with alcohol addiction).

Best wishes!
