The most common treatment for most serious gallbladder conditions is surgery to remove the gallbladder. This operation is called a cholecystectomy. Fortunately, the gallbladder is an organ people can live without. Your liver produces enough bile to digest a normal diet. Once the gallbladder is removed, bile flows out of the liver instead of being stored in the gallbladder.

Other procedures can help open blockages of the bile duct. ENRP (Endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography) is often helpful to achieve this outcome, or blocked ducts might be opened via tube (stent) insertion. Cancerous tumors may be removed by surgery, but usually a tumor cannot be completely removed and treatment focuses on controlling symptoms.  Very early gallbladder cancer is treated by gallbladder removal.

In other cases, nonsurgical approaches such as medications can be used to dissolve the gallstones or a doctor might order an antibiotic regime for you to prepare for surgery.
