Medical treatment for gallstones has largely been abandoned because gallstones can become small enough to slip out of the gallbladder, and can then get hung up in the bile duct system. This can then lead to infection of the bile ducts, jaundice and pancreatitis.

The appropriate treatment of symptomatic gallstones is surgery to remove the gallbladder and gallstones.
