I had my surgery two weeks ago plus 2 days. Turns out I had/have gallbladder cancer. I was totally blown away at my post op appt. From what I've read it's rare. I'm a little angry that I wasn't told immediately after the surgery. A little bit of paternalism by the doctor. I'm seeing am oncologist on Wed, but I'm wondering if it's so rare should I be going down to the the University hospital? They were still able to take it out laparoscopically by putting it in a "bag" before pulling it out whole.

The appropriate management of gallbladder carcinoma depends a great deal on how advanced the disease is at the time of diagnosis. If it has not extensively spread outside of the gallbladder itself, the usual treatment is to go back and surgically remove the portion of the liver where the gallbladder was removed from, as well as performing an extensive removal of the lymph nodes around the liver. Chemotherapy can also be considered in cases where the tumor is advanced, or has spread outside of the gallbladder.

As gallbladder cancer is an uncommon and aggressive type of cancer, it is best to seek care from medical oncologists and surgical oncologists who have experience managing this type of cancer.
