My grandfather is in his 60s and has been diagnosed with chronic pancreatitis from drinking. He is taking enzymes in order to gain weight. Is there anything else we can possibly do to help him gain weight? Ideally he would love to gain 15 pounds. He cannot take steroids due to previous health issues.

Thank You.

First of all, he needs to stop drinking, completely.

If he continues to have severe pain after eating, despite the pancreatic enzyme medicaiton and abstinence from alcohol, then he should be seen by a GI doctor with expertise in managing chronic pancreatitis. Sometimes, placement of a bypass tube (stent) into the pancreatic duct, or even surgery to remove the most diseased part of the pancreas, may be helpful in patients with severe chronic pancreatitis that is not responsive to more conservative measures.
