Q: Fusion of the SI joint
asked by: DoctorQuestion on January 15th, 2009
I have spent the last 11 years looking for a reason for the pain I'm in, and can't seem to get an answer. Is there any point in me seeing a Neurosurgeon for this problem? It seems to be a problem with nerves, muscles, etc at this point - not with the bone. I feel like it healed in the wrong place. I was in a small town when it happened and they saw only one break. It took 6 months to see a Ortho surgeon who told me there were 3 breaks. Can you suggest anything that I could look into that might help? All the MRI's, CT scans, etc don't seem to show anything. Just when I decide that I need to stop looking for help and just live with my condition, I meet someone who tells me to keep looking - it's very difficult emotionally. Anything you could suggest would be much appreciated. Thanks so much.

Your question involves the unresolved pain you are experiencing from a fall that happened about 10 years ago.

You mentioned that your SI joint was fused. One of the most common misconceptions is that the SI joints do not actually move like other joints. This joint, while having a very small and difficult to measure amount of movement, is critical in the human walking cycle, called gait.

A fusion may create systemic movement imbalance, due to the restriction of motion in your SI joint. It is also important to keep in mind that any surgical procedure may produce inhibition of muscles, particularly the deep spinal stabilizing muscles.

If visual diagnostics are not showing anything, it may be a good idea to be evaluated by a specialist in movement and therapies that focus on movement imbalances. You may want to find a good psychiatrist.
