I wrote in a couple of days ago about my brother in law who had hip revision surgery, then began passing frequent water clear mucous stools.
He was put on IV's and one unit of blood was transfused for 7.9 Hemoglobin, indicating anemia. He finally stopped the diarrhea for 2 days, but has not passed a formed stool for 6 days now. Today he was given a 2nd unit of blood. He is passing gas, but no stool of any kind--watery or otherwise. No complaints of pain, nausea or vomiting. Any opinions?

He was taking Immodium, right? That can cause constipation, alright. I'd suggest that he take a fibre supplement like Metemucil or psyllium husks to promote a bowel cleansing.

He took 2 doses of Immodium on Sat., 5 days ago. M.D. released him from hospital just a few hours ago with no real explanation of what happened or why. Still no formed or colored stool. Says bowels should return to normal in 1-2 weeks. We'll see.......

Until then, what have they prescribed for the constipation?

Nothing. Once he was home I started him on abdominal massage to stimulate peristasis and that is what has helped. He is able to have a BM now, but only with the help of massage. If I don't do the abdominal massage, his abdomen gets distended. With the massage, he has results within a couple of hours. He has an appointment on the 29th.

It seems like you're getting close to an answer.

This question might seem out there, but have you ever considered acupuncture as a treatment modality alternative? IT's possible that the intestinal organs are energetically blocked and could benefit from the free flow of energy to them.

Had not thought of that, but certainly open to it. Will be seeing MD this A.M. and will post later........
