asked by: DoctorQuestion on April 16th, 2009
Hi,
I have been facing frequent bowls on and off from last 2 years now.I have to pass motion 2-3 times in a day atleast whenever i have this problem. I never had such a problem before and used to have constipation indeed. Now sometimes immedaitely after eating i feel the urge of passing motion. The quantity i eat is less then what comes out. My appetite is also not more and i have lost 3-4 Kgs and have noy been able to gain weight.I sometimes get lot of burp specailly with aearted drink and when i get up in the morning and after one first bowl.
Sometimes my stool comes dark in color and sometimes it comes normal. the stool is semi formed and looks like a lot of air is also passed with the stool and some times it hard. Recently i have started getting abdominal pain and chest pain, which is more beacuse of gas formation i feel. I have had disturbed menstrual cycle in last 3 months where it was delayed by 15 days. Kindly suggest what could be the treatment of this problem and diagnosis

Your symptoms certainly sound like Irritable Bowel Syndrome. You did not mention whether or not you have had a colonoscopy and stool cultures performed. If not, then these should be done to rule-out other potential causes of frequent or loose stools. If you do, indeed, have Irritable Bowel Syndrome, then adding as much fiber to your diet as possible may be helpful (Citrucel or Benefiber are available here in the USA). Also, pay close attention to your diet, and try to avoid foods that make your symptoms worse (although you must still try and eat a healthy, balanced diet).

Although it is impossible to make a diagnosis or recommend specific treatments over the Internet, I hope that this information will be helpful to you.

Sincerely / Robert A. Wascher, MD, FACS
