Q: Four year old is behind

First off, I'm far from being the perfect parent and I'm really young but I try. I'm just really worried about my four year old. He's not talking like he should be. He's talking enough for me to know he's not autistic or anything but he's not where he needs to be. He can tell me every character off Spongebob and has memorized some of the shows. He's memorized songs but he babbles ALOT and it took me forever to teach him his name. And he can't carry on a conversation with me. (not one I would understand anyway.) could someone please tell me what I'm doing wrong or give some suggestions on how to get him up to speed. He turns four officially in June and then he goes to school in September and I don't want him to be behind.

Reading books to children is supposed to improve their vocabulry and speach...!! Just try reading to him instead of tv...

mykidsmylife2004 --have you had his ears checked also to make sure he doesn't have a hearing or speech troubles..Kids pick up cartoon stuff fairly easy even though they may not say the names perfect..

Talking to your little one in normal talking voice and not baby talk is also important..When you say things ask do you know what that word means and then tell him if he doesn't..Show him what it means..Read to him keep story lines simple and have him talk to you about the story..Play games with words..Put names on paper and stick up around the house and as youboth walk by ask what that word is and means..have fun learning together..

My nephew, Zach was a bit like that before since my brother relied too much on a sitter. Let's him watch TV all the time. Good thing my brother doesn't anymore since I took over. I would usually just read to him at night and on my free time, we'd go to the garden, discuss about different insects and sometimes listen to him talk even if he'd only manage a few words. But it helps.
