Q: Forget incompetent pharmacists refusing to fill prescription

Now we have doctors refusing to perform pap smears.

I'm sorry, but anyone who refuses to perform potentially life-saving diagnostic tests due to "moral objections" is not fit to practice medicine. They should join the "conscientious objector" pharmacists in the unemployment line. Or go become a plumber or something.

O.o Wait, what? Becoming a doctor means you must rise above some things; you must heal the enemy and the ally. Your intention must always be the patient's health, not your own moral health.

That make me want to hit someone.

A signature on a piece of paper santifies your vagina to be passed by a speculum. Why? Why do people maintain these archaic opinions on people's reproductive organs?

This, exactly. Pretty soon we're going to have doctors who refuse to treat someone because of their skin colour or their religious beliefs. This is going way too far.

You know what? Most prolifers might as well just step out from behind their puny smokescreen and admit that the simple truth is they hate women and will do everything in their power to make sure we suffer for being born with the wrong pair of chromosomes. I'm sick of this lie. I never understood before why some people call them "proliars" but I'm beginning to understand it. Nobody that is truly prolife would take measures to make health care more difficult for women to obtain, nor would they advocate it.

There are some that can honestly call themselves "prolife" but it appears they are a dying breed. The "pro-fetus/pro-homicide of born people/anti-woman" variety seem to be taking over. Maybe they've caused some "accidents" for the prolifers that still give a damn about women the way they've caused "accidents" for prochoicers. I've seen them gang up on prolifers that don't see things their way before...they're like a pack of hyenas, cowardly, drooling, greedy humpback deformities spouting gibberish that either kill the sickly or wait for a bigger predator to do most of the work for them before closing in.

I think that's a good name for "prolifers" that toss around "proabortion" as a covert insult. I'll refer to them now as hyenas, because they really are sick little diseased animals whose voices are nothing better than annoying, insane gibberish.

.

What a perfectly strange story. I followed the link, and more links in the story, but never could find any explanation as to what religion it was, or what it was about pap smears that offended their religion.

Do you have any idea?

Does that matter? How does that make their actions less permissable?

Would it be more excusable if it were religion A or religion B?

Actually, biologists are discovering that hyenas actually aren't as bad as the name that has been given to them. Turns out they're hunters, not just scavengers, and have very strong matriarchal societies. So it's more of an insult to the hyena to compare it to a pro-lifer!!

We do not need to worry about this article. There is always gonna be crazy people everywhere doing bizarre things that doesn't mean it's common thing happening so we not need to worry about this one. Abortion and pap smears are two different things. If a obgyn doctor doesn't do pap smear for whichever reason then they shouldn't have studied obgyn. That's not being a obgyn doctor lol! They do can refuse to do abortions because well that's killing so that's different ballpark.

so are you saying that just because these incidents rarely occur that we should not worry about the women being affected, because not that many are?

When one woman is affected in this capacity, that is too many. What if just one woman was refused a pap smear and was also refused a referral (which is illegal by the way, but most women will not report it)? What happens when she develops cervical cancer that could have been caught early if the doctor had either treated her or referred her? But I guess it shouldn't matter, because it doesn't happen very often. Confused

If a woman sees a doctor refusing a pap smear then she should think how bizarre is that and look for another one. It is extremely unlikely, I actually have doubts this is true at all because if a doctor refuse pap smear then means he doesn't want to make money and how is it that a doctor don't want to make money? Makes no sense.

This happened in Canada, where a) in some areas there is a pretty severe doctor shortage, so "find another doctor" isn't an option, and b) there's not much profit motive in medicine, because all the doctors work for the government.

Sorry, but a gynecologist that refuses to perform a pap smear, on certain women or in general, is not fit to practice medicine.

there are plenty of doctors who do what they do because they want to help people, not because they are out to make the big bucks. It's called working pro bono. Many doctors do it after establishing their practice, and lose money doing it in the process.

And like snug said, if there is a shortage and you can't find a doctor in time, what fault does the woman have?

And what is that these doctors do? They let people seeing them and don't charge them? Do surgeries for free? Boy I would love to find a doctor that. Wouldn't that be nice? If anybody knows of a doctor that works pro bono here in Raleigh area please let me know to go to him!

Nightangel, you're missing the point again.

You said "I actually have doubts this is true at all because if a doctor refuse pap smear then means he doesn't want to make money and how is it that a doctor don't want to make money?"

People have now explained to you that A. this is happening in Canada which has socialized health care, and B. that some doctors DO give health care for free.

Proving, of course, that the article and the issue at hand is indeed REAL, and it is a REAL PROBLEM. What if "just a few" doctors refused to give mammograms? I bet you'd be much more up in arms about that; but because pap smears somehow relate to "sex" and we all know that "woman sex = bad", you have "no concern" for all of these women who could possibly develop cervical cancer*. It's "not a problem" in your mind.

What if doctors started refusing to give physical exams in general, citing religious reasons? Can anyone else think of some preventative medicine we have these days that would be disasterous if doctors began to refuse to do it?

Oh I know; pre-natal care. What if doctors began refusing to test for Down's Syndrome and hundreds of other birth defects, citing again nothing more insubstantial than "religious reasons"? "Well it would be more natural, God's will" you say, as a woman dies trying to give birth to a fetus who's head is the size of a watermelon because it has hydroencephalitus.

As a doctor, you take an oath to protect your PATIENT, not your religious beliefs. Refusing to do a pap smear can cause a LETHAL cancer to develop unnoticed. How on Earth can you tell me that is upholding the oath? It's NOT.

The bible doesn't say CRACK about pap-smears. I don't know what religion these doctors are, but here in the "free world", responsible people don't let their religion force them to cause harm to another person by refusing care.

"I'm sorry, I couldn't resuscitate him because mouth-to-mouth contact is against my religion." (don't get on me about how these days there's a kit. I know. I have one. It's just an example.)

"Where was the wound? On her chest; but I could not staunch the bleeding or take care of the injury because looking upon a woman's chest is against my religion."

* Because cervical cancer is caused by HPV which is an STD which only naughty promiscuous women who have premarital sex catch, so they should be made to suffer and die for their sins!!

Planned Parenthood will accept patients for Paps without the ability to pay.

You don't think denying women a diagnostic test which can detect a lethal cancer counts as 'killing people' then NA? What would you call it? An act of mercy?

It's very difficult to understand a topic like this without more information.

Do you mind that I'd like to actually understand what's going on?

I am also having problems taking this report seriously, it sounds like some sort of weird joke.

So it does make a difference what religion it is?
