The rate of circumcision is generally declining in the US. Around 1980, about 80% of all male babies were circumcised. Now, depending upon where they're born, male babies are circumcised at a rate from about 40 - 80%. Here are some statistics from a national database.
Today, the rate is around 60% nationally. It's important to remember that 85% of the world is intact, the way nature intended. Infant circumcision is on rapid decline and there is no reason to perform it--it is in fact harmful to a baby.
I agree that it can be harmful, but circumcision also plays an important role in religious initiations throughout the world, which I feel is also important. However, if I have a male child, we will opt out of the circumcision option.
