Hi,
had 2 surgeries to remove L3/L4 disc last year. 2nd Aug 17th 2011. Had foot drop since mid June 2011 (1st surgery) Currently walking with a major limp. lower foot and outside shin numb since. Not able to curl toes upward. Any advice?

Usually, if a nerve injury is temporary it will resovle within six months, a year at the most. If a year has passed and you still have problems (especially if there has been absolutely no change), then the nerve will most likely not get better.

You should have some electrical studies done, to assess the status of the peripheral nerves. If it appears that they are not going to recover, then you have a couple of options. Live with it the way it is and wear a brace such as an AFO or have tendon transfers to regain some active dorsiflexion of the ankle.

The surgery will not regain the sensation however, just the muscle action.

Again, see a neurologist or physiatrist (specialist in PM&R - physical medicine and rehabilitation) for an evaluation.
