Q: Follicle infections
asked by: DoctorQuestion on December 21st, 2008
This all started several months ago, after sleeping with an escort and having the condom break. i was tested for the more common std's and all results were negative. the doctors all seem to think it is not std related, but the timing and the fact that is has not gone away is worrying me. The hair folicles on my scrotum and a little between my legs and i think my anus area feel inflamed and look like they are raised. The derms said they look "normal". They do not think it looks like a bacterial infection either. I am wondering what else this can be. I want a diagnosis and hopefully a successful treatment. What else can this be? I also seem to have headaches more commonly and more acne recently. I do not know if they are related or not.

Current medical treatment: have tried topical steroids, OTC yeast and jock itch medicine with no improvement. have consulted primary care doctor and 2 derms and no diagnosis.

You might want to visit a dermatologist again and have a follicle examination, by pulling a hair from the affected area and examining it under a microscope. If there is a fungal infection, the spores would be visible under a microscope. Otherwise, a bacterial infection might be causing this condition. If the last is the case, the dermatologist should prescribe antibiotics.
