Q: fluid bump in outer ear canal

My boyfriend has a painful, red bump which has grown within the past week in his ear. It appears to be on the outer ear canal, visible when looking into ear. It is fluid filled and he says it goes down when he takes a shower and lets the hot water hit it. But then it almost seems to "fill up" again afterwards.

He originally thought it was a pimple, I can guarantee it is NOT. He tried puncturing it with a clean sterile needle and it was extremely painful, it bled and some puss came out as well and shrank a little but is still large and painful.

Is this something serious, does he need to go to the doctor, has anyone else seen anything like this? I've searched the internet and couldn't find anything so if anyone can help, PLEASE it would be so appreciated.

Thanks.

First things first PLEASE DO NOT punture the growth with anything you can never say what will happened next. I suggest for your boyfriend to go to an ENT specialist (Ear, Nose and Throat) to have it check. Good luck - Hart74

The Diagnosis
Follow up on the ear bump.... it turns out that it was actually a Sebaceous cyst, two small ones to be exact. The doctor in the ER said that in time they will burst on their own they are extremely painful and can eventually lead, if not taken care of, to the jaw line and create interior infections there. So she punctured the bubble and with sterile q-tips pretty much squeezed the fluid and cyst out of the ear...

Wanted to get the word out in case anyone else may have a similiar situation, I know it would have helped us out if someone else had the same problem....

Same thing- so thanks
I have the EXACT same thing going on- guessing it's the same thing, so if it doesn't go down in the next week (punctured with sterile needle today, been putting witch hazel on it all week) I'll get it professionally popped. Thanks for posting the follow up!

No problem! I figured if anyone else had the problem, they would want to know what was going on.

You may actually need someone to help you because if it is a cyst, you may need it to be "pushed" out... or what I would say, instead of just someone, I'd say a doctor is the best person to go to with that...

painful bump in the ear canal
Ahh... i think i have this. my ear started hurting two days ago and at first i though i might have had an ear infection, but it didn't feel internal. second day i realized there was a bump. i can feel it. my boyfriend looked at it last night and said he can see it but that it doesn't appear red. i am going to have him look at it again to see if he can see fluid and then go see a doctor. man this thing hurts and i have to wear head phones a lot at work. thank you so much for posting Smile
