Q: Fishy odor from penis
asked by: DoctorQuestion on October 12th, 2009
my 5 year old child has suffered on and off over the past couple of years with a fishy odour coming from his penis. When this 1st started we took him the doctors and urine was tested and they looked at his penis and couldnt see anything unusual and the results didnt bring anything back but yet the smell still comes every couple of weeks, my child is now conciuos of this himself and its starting to get very frustrating as it gets so strong at times everyone around can smell it. we keep him clean and fresh underwear on daily, if not more than twice daily. Please help, the doctors seem to be dismissing it, i'm wondering it its something he's eating and having a reaction to?

Hello and welcome to eHealth Forum!

A fishy odor from private parts is generally due to infection by Gardnerella bacteria. It is not clear how the infection comes. Usually it affects females. In males the infection has no other symptoms. It usually does not affect children but it’s not an impossibility. Treatment is usually by antibiotics.

The only other infection that causes fishy odor is fungal infection. This can be diagnosed by scratch test for fungus.

Since a confirmed diagnosis cannot be given on net please discuss this with your doctor once. Hope this helps. Take care!
