Q: Fish Oil Supplements

What are fish oil supplements good for?

I've read that fish oil contains EPA (eicosapentaenoic acid) and DHA (docosahexaenoic acid). Both EPA and DHA are known as essential omega-3 fatty acids because the body cannot make them on its own. Fish oil provides one source of these important Omega-3 nutrients. Fish Oil Concentrate is a mixture of natural triglycerides providing a dietary source of Omega-3 polyunsaturates containing Eicosapentaenoic Acid (EPA) and Docosahexaenoic Acid (DHA).

But what will this help improve in my overall nutrition?

Omega 3 fattya acids will help improve your heart health. The American Heart Association recommends omega 3 fatty acids for those who have cardiovascular problems or those who are at risk of having it. Research strongly suggests that omega 3 fatty acids help to bring triglyceride levels down and also lowers blood pressure. You should eat fish at least twice a week, fish that has been caught in cold waters have the highest levels of omega 3 fatty acids. If you cannot include fish in your diet you should go for an omega 3 supplement.

Evidence from several studies has suggested that amounts of DHA and EPA in the form of fish or fish oil supplements lowers triglycerides, slows the buildup of atherosclerotic plaques ("hardening of the arteries"), lowers blood pressure slightly, as well as reduces the risk of death, heart attack, dangerous abnormal heart rhythms, and strokes in people with known heart disease. However, high doses may have harmful effects, such as an increased risk of bleeding. Although similar benefits are proposed for alpha-linolenic acid, scientific evidence is less compelling, and beneficial effects may be less pronounced.

It should also be noted that there are reports that fish oil supplements may maintain brain function.

Most people don't get to eat fish at the recommended values per week. Thus, fish oil supplements may be more convenient.
