Congratulation! It is a fantasic time of discovery for you.

What you heard is true for only some women. The 'cherry' is a membrane that partly covers the vagina's entrance called the hymen. This can be present or absent in different women. It can also be stiff or elastic.

You probably need to get some personal lubricant. It is sold in the condom/pad/tampon isle of your local pharmacy or store. Some brand names are Astroglide, Wet and KY. He can put it on his penis, on your vulva and he or you can put some on your fingers during foreplay to get it deep inside you.
