Q: First pap smear

I'm 18, and a virgin, and i just got my first pap smear. I was worried, because everything ind read said it was going to be really painful, and the whole idea was humiliating. My doctor was a nice older lady, and i tried to relax, and laugh about the situation. I reassured myself she's a doctor, she does this all the time, i haven't got anything to be ashamed of... But i was really terrified. So i was especially shocked when i barely felt a thing 0.o. It was uncomfortable, and horribly embarrassing, but almost painless. My cousin, who went the same day, and had the same doctor, was complaining afterwards about how much it hurt, and how horrible it was. Is there something wrong with me? i barely felt anything!?

I don't think there is anything wrong with you. Pap smears have never hurt me and I think most women don't feel them. Are you sure she wasn't just saying she had pain because she thought she should be saying that? If not, I think pain could be caused by the stress of the procedure causing the vagina to spasm or tense up, or possibly even an infection of some kind. The doctor couldn't care less about the actual procedure, and it was more embarrasing to you than to her. They really do do it all the time and it just becomes routine, no big deal. It's good that you are taking care of your health.

i glad you got it done, some women dont even go to the doctor's for it.
i am 33 years old and i feel very tense and uncomfortable when i have it done. if you look at my face you would know i am not happy, i try to practice breathing.
i like the clear plastic ones better than the metal ones. and i cant stand when they make that noise that sounds like theyre cranking something (opening you wider so they can see).
but anyway, i have to get it done once a year because my family have a history of cyst, tumors and everything else.
