it was my first month on the pill and on the last saturday before i started my week on placebo pills, i took my active birth control pill about 12 hours late. sunday morning, i took my placebo pill and that afternoon had sex and the condom broke. he didn't ejaculate inside me. i went to planned parenthood on monday to check to make sure that there were no pieces of condom inside of me that might cause infection. the nurse practitioner said that i was probably in the clear and not pregnant, even though i took that last pill 12 hours late. about three days into my placebo week, i had a VERY little bit of dark spotting, that only happened once during the day. it was so light that i would not at all consider it a period and did not have any other spotting the rest of the week. now i have started a new pack of pills and am on the fourth active one, but still no period. should i be worried? can i be pregnant? how long do i have to wait before i can take a pregnancy test? it has been 12 days since the intercourse. i havent had sex since.

Since you took a pill 12 hours late, it is possible that you are pregnant. You can test as early as eight days after conception but it is best to wait until you have missed a period. Since this occured right before your period, you may want to wait to see if you miss your next period. It takes time for the HCG level to be high enough for detection in a home pregnancy test and right now, it is probably too soon. Keep in mind that different brands of pregnancy tests looks for different levels of HCG. One test may detect as little as 20mIU of HCG while another requires a level of 100 mIU before it will register as positive.

I still think it's possible that you are pregnant. Like I said earlier, I believe it is too soon to get an accurate reading from a pregnancy test. I know everyone hates to hear this when it is possible that they are pregnant but you will have to wait and see if you miss another period or if you get a positive test result.
