Q: Fingertips pulling back from nail

I wasn't sure where to post this, so this section seemed best.

Whatever the stuff is called that basically attaches the skin to the sides of the fingernails is beginning to come loose and break off towards the top of the nail, resulting in my fingertips pulling slightly back from the nail and making the nail grow wider at the top. It's kind of hard to explain, but does anyone know what I'm talking about and how to reverse this problem?
