Q: Finger Amputation Complications?

My husband had a crush injury at work to his hand. His pinkie was partially crushed off and healed well after surgery (12/7/0Cool. His ring finger had an open wound and ulcers and dead blackened tissue which never healed properly and inevitably ended up being amputated just above the first knuckle from the hand (4/17/09). His follow up appointment with the surgeon was last Friday which the was the first unwrapping of the "stub", it was grotesquely swollen, extremely soar and red. The surgeon put him on Levaquin and Lyrica and told him to change the dressing daily until yet another appointment on Tuesday (the 28th). It is still very swollen and red and very painful today. Is this normal? We feel like were not being "told everything". We are afraid that there isn't much left to cut off if the infection goes any further (even though a culture was done and came up nothing). Any suggestions? Anything questions we should be asking? Any thing you can suggest to help with the at home pain (he's on Lortab and Ibprofen) but the throb and pain is still unbearable.

Luckily my infection was all cut off and my finger is healing beautifully. As for the pain... the only thing that helps mine is Percocet, taking off the bandage and icing it. The doctors put on a pressure bandage to try to shape it and decrease the swelling, but unfortunately that also causes most of the pain. I leave my bandage off for about 30 mins before going back into torture.
