Menstruation Answer A5481

A missing period can cause thickening of the inner lining of the uterus thus causing heavy and prolonged bleeding when the period starts. The problem might be related to a hormonal imbalance that caused the missing of the periods in the first place. Endometriosis, adenomyosis, and endomethrial polyps are just three of the many possible causes for prolonged uterine bleeding called menorrhagia.

You might want to visit a gynecologist for hormonal laboratory tests, a vaginal examination, and an ultrasound examination.
