Q: Figuring dates of conception and increased blood sugar levels
asked by: DoctorQuestion on March 10th, 2009
I found out last month that I was pregnant and was told that I was 9 weeks. 3 days (Feb 17th). Because I am diabetic, I was told that my baby would be big and be larger than usual. Now, I'm scared. Is there a way to find out if I got pregnant in December or January. I'm really scared that my baby is growing too fast and will not be healthy. I did get my December period, Dec 12th and was due get my Jan. period on the 13th. I had unprotected sex on the 13th of January. I took a pregnancy test on Jan 15 and it was positive. I took a blood test Feb 3rd and it was confirmed. I had my first prenatal visit Feb 17th and was told by the size of the baby that I was 9 weeks, 3 days. How can I be sure, I'm terrified that my baby isn't as old as they say. Is there a way to be sure I got pregnant in December and not January 13th? I haven't been able to eat or sleep since I found out that my baby is growing way too fast.

The conception of the baby occurs on the day you ovulate. The ovulation itself occurs exactly fourteen days before the start of the next period. Since you got pregnant, you missed your period and you will have to do a calculation based on the expected first day of a period in January. Assuming that the duration of your menstrual cycle is 28 days, you should have had your new period started at December 9th. Subtracting 14 days gives us the date of the ovulation: December 26th. Since the egg and the spermatozoids can live up to 48 hours, the conception happened somewhere between December 26th and 28th.

The increased blood sugar in the mother’s body easily transfers via the placenta to the baby, but the insulin does not cross the placenta. Therefore, the baby receives more glucose (blood sugar) than it needs, and the excess is converted into fat. The fat is developed in different parts of the baby’s body leading to macrosomia (larger parts of the body and a larger body as a whole). This baby would more probably need a cesarean section since it might be too big to be delivered naturally. The increased blood sugar might also affect the development of the respiratory system. Therefore, controlling the blood sugar with medication is obligatory. Thus, the effects of the increased blood sugar on the baby will be minimized and the baby can be born with no complications.
